Historic India–Japan Academic Consortium Led by IIT Guwahati

Twenty-two premier institutions from Northeast India have signed a Letter of Intent to form the Northeast India–Japan International Academic and Research Consortium, a move intended to deepen academic and research ties between the region and Japan. The agreement, described by organisers as historic, aims to boost student mobility, research collaboration and industry linkages across science, technology and medicine.

The consortium brings together a mix of engineering, medical and research institutions, including several National Institutes of Technology (NITs), Indian Institutes of Information Technology (IIITs), NERIST, AIIMS Guwahati, NERIWALM, Tezpur University, Gauhati University, Cotton University and Assam Engineering College. IIT Guwahati will serve as the nodal institution on the Indian side, while Gifu University will coordinate activities from Japan.

Aligned with Japan’s sustained focus on Northeast India under the MEXT Inter-University Exchange Project since 2022, the consortium has set an ambitious mobility target: roughly 5,000 student exchanges in each direction over the next five years. Organisers say this will significantly increase academic mobility and cross-cultural learning between the two countries.

The LoI was signed during the Japan–NER Academia-Industry Cooperation Symposium 2026, a joint event hosted by IIT Guwahati and Gifu University. The consortium is expected to create structured channels for joint research projects, faculty exchanges, shared facilities and industry partnerships that leverage regional strengths.

Officials emphasise that the partnership is not limited to engineering but will include medical and interdisciplinary research, opening opportunities for collaborative innovation, technology transfer and capacity building across borders. Organisers also expect the collaboration to attract multilateral engagement and external funding for large-scale projects.

“This marks a new beginning, as institutions across states unite to form a unique consortium that brings together engineers, medical professionals, scientists, and policymakers,” said Devendra Jalihal, Director of IIT Guwahati.

Stakeholders view the initiative as a milestone for the Northeast’s global academic footprint and a step toward strengthening India–Japan ties in higher education and research. If implemented as planned, the consortium could reshape academic cooperation in the region and provide sustained opportunities for students, researchers and industry partners on both sides.
