Eight opposition MPs suspended from the Lok Sabha for disorderly conduct during the first phase of the Budget Session are likely to have their suspensions revoked today, Tuesday, March 17, 2026, after a special meeting convened at the request of Speaker Om Birla reached a decision to move a formal revocation motion in the House, sources said.
According to published reports, the eight suspended MPs include seven from the Congress party and one from the CPI(M). They were earlier suspended for the entire duration of the session following heated incidents and disruptive behaviour in the House during the opening phase of the Budget proceedings. Opposition parties have since repeatedly asked the Speaker to withdraw the suspensions and allow their members to return to the chamber.
Sources said the special meeting with Speaker Om Birla produced a unanimous outcome: the suspended opposition MPs agreed to refrain from staging protests in the Well of the House and to exercise restraint in future conduct on the floor. After receiving this assurance, the Speaker indicated he was in favour of lifting the penalties.
Once the revocation motion is formally moved and adopted in the Lok Sabha later today, the eight MPs are expected to resume normal participation in parliamentary business. Observers say the step would end the recent standoff in the House and allow proceedings to continue without the disruption that prompted the original suspensions.
