BJP Eyes Third Term in Assam: Diganta Kalita Reacts to Poll Schedule
Assam BJP MLA Diganta Kalita said on March 16 that the Bharatiya Janata Party and its allies are aiming for a “third consecutive term” after the Election Commission of India (ECI) announced the schedule for upcoming Assembly elections, with polling in Assam set for April 9 and counting of votes on May 4. The ECI’s announcement also triggered the immediate implementation of the Model Code of Conduct in all poll-bound regions.
Reacting to the schedule, Kalita said the ruling alliance’s preparations were complete ahead of the single-phase vote. “The Election Commission of India has announced the dates for the Assam state elections, scheduled for April 9. All major parties, including the BJP and its allies, have completed their preparations,” he said.
Kalita added that the alliance will seek a renewed mandate from voters. “In Assam, the BJP and its allies are aiming for a third consecutive term,” he said, framing the contest as a bid to continue their current governance across the state.
Highlighting organisational readiness, Kalita said party workers were mobilised for campaigning. “Our party workers are fully prepared, and our message to the people of Assam is clear: the BJP and its allies are committed to their progress. We seek the blessings and guidance of the people to win even more seats than before,” he said.
The ECI announced election dates for four states and the Union Territory of Puducherry. Assam and Kerala will vote in a single phase on April 9. West Bengal will hold polling in two phases on April 23 and April 29, while Tamil Nadu will vote on April 23. Puducherry’s polling is also scheduled for April 9.
The Commission also scheduled by-elections for six Assembly seats across Goa, Gujarat, Karnataka, Maharashtra, Nagaland and Tripura. Voting for seats in Goa, Karnataka, Nagaland and Tripura will take place on April 9, while Gujarat and Maharashtra will vote on April 23.
Assam will elect representatives to all 126 Assembly constituencies on April 9; the term of the current Assembly is set to end on May 20. The coming weeks will determine whether the ruling alliance secures another term and how voters respond to the campaign agendas presented by competing parties.
