Pramila Rani Brahma Files Bold Bid for BPF Ticket in Kokrajhar

Pramila Rani Brahma on March 15 submitted her nomination application for the No. 3 Kokrajhar Legislative Assembly constituency, seeking the Bodoland People’s Front (BPF) ticket ahead of the upcoming elections. Brahma said she was prompted to stand again after requests from youth and the public, and that this would be the last election she intends to contest.

The former minister and senior BPF leader handed her application to party Central General Secretary Maneswar Basumatary at the Bodoland Guest House in Kokrajhar. Speaking to reporters after filing, she reiterated her decision was driven by public appeals and declined to set a longer-term political timeline beyond confirming this will be her final run.

Responding to reports that Shiuli Mohilary, wife of former BTC chief Hagrama Mohilary, may also seek the BPF ticket from Kokrajhar, Brahma said there is nothing wrong with aspiring to contest elections. “In a democracy, everyone has the right to seek a ticket. The party high command will decide who will contest,” she told the media. Sources say Shiuli Mohilary is likely to submit her application on Monday, March 16.

Brahma acknowledged there were other factors behind her defeat in the last Assembly election to Lawrence Islary of the United People’s Party Liberal, adding that political dynamics played a role though she did not elaborate further. Meanwhile, Kishore Basumatary has also applied for the Kokrajhar ticket.

The last date for submitting applications to the BPF is March 17. In a related development, Namita Brahma on Sunday, March 15 submitted her application seeking the BPF ticket from the Gossaigaon constituency. The multiple filings set up an internal contest for key BPF seats as the party finalizes candidates ahead of the polls.
