The Election Commission of India has announced by-elections for eight assembly constituencies across six states, scheduling polling in two phases on April 9 and April 23, 2026, to fill vacancies largely caused by the deaths of sitting legislators. Counting of votes for all seats is set for May 4, 2026, and the election process will conclude by May 6, 2026.

The first phase, on April 9, 2026, will cover constituencies in Goa, Karnataka, Nagaland and Tripura. The EC said the gazette notification for these seats will be issued on March 16, 2026; the last date for filing nominations is March 23, 2026; scrutiny will be held on March 24, 2026; and candidates may withdraw nominations until March 26, 2026.

The second phase, on April 23, 2026, will include seats in Gujarat and Maharashtra. The gazette notification for second-phase constituencies will be issued on March 30, 2026; nominations must be filed by April 6, 2026; scrutiny will take place on April 7, 2026; and withdrawal of nominations is allowed until April 9, 2026.

Specific vacancies named by the EC include Nagaland’s 28-Koridang (ST) seat after the death of former minister Imkong L Imchen, and Tripura’s 56-Dharmanagar following the death of senior leader and former minister Biswa Bandhu Sen. Goa’s 21-Ponda seat is vacant after the death of Ravi Naik, and Gujarat’s 111-Umreth after the death of Govindbhai Raijibhai Parmar.

Karnataka will hold by-polls in two constituencies-24-Bagalkot, vacant after the death of Meti Hullappa Yamanappa (HY Meti), and 107-Davanagere South, vacant after the death of Shamanur Shivashankarappa. Maharashtra’s by-elections will be for 223-Rahuri and 201-Baramati, following the deaths of Shivaji Bhanudas Kardile and Ajit Anataro Pawar respectively.

These by-elections are intended to restore full membership to the respective state legislative assemblies and ensure representation for the affected constituencies ahead of the scheduled counting on May 4, 2026.
