Manipur: Four Held for Extorting Contractual Nurses, Rs 39 Lakh Seized
Four people were arrested in Imphal on Sunday, March 15, 2026, after allegedly extorting money from contractual nurses employed at the Jawaharlal Nehru Institute of Medical Sciences (JNIMS), police said. The arrests followed a first information report (FIR) lodged by the victims, prompting a probe that led to multiple raids in Imphal West on Friday, March 13, authorities added.
Acting on the nurses’ complaint, police carried out coordinated searches at several locations across Imphal West and detained the four suspects from their homes, an official statement said. Investigators said the operation was the result of a targeted inquiry after the alleged victims reported forcible collection of money.
During the raids, police recovered cash amounting to Rs 39 lakh and a pistol from the accused, the statement said. Preliminary findings indicate the extortion was allegedly carried out on the instructions of the banned militant outfit Kangleipak Communist Party (Taibangnganba), and that funds collected from the nurses were reportedly transferred to the underground organisation.
Police said the investigation is ongoing and further legal action will follow as evidence is consolidated. The case has drawn attention to security concerns for contractual healthcare workers and the alleged channels of funding for underground groups in the region.
