On International Women’s Day, March 8, the Maharashtra Public Health Department is launching a statewide HPV vaccination campaign to protect girls who have completed 14 years of age but not yet turned 15, aiming to prevent cervical cancer and strengthen women’s health and empowerment. The drive begins across the state on March 8 and will run with a three-month rollout period.
The department has set a target of vaccinating 9 lakh 84 thousand (984,000) girls during the campaign. The HPV vaccine protects against the human papillomavirus (HPV), which is a leading cause of cervical cancer; vaccinating early helps reduce the long-term risk of the disease.
All beneficiary registration and the issuance of vaccination certificates will be handled digitally through the Central Government’s U-WIN portal. Officials say the fully digital process is intended to streamline enrollment, ensure accurate records, and speed certificate distribution.
Health authorities describe the campaign as part of broader efforts to protect adolescent girls’ health and reduce future cervical cancer burden in the state. Parents and guardians of eligible girls are advised to complete registration through the U-WIN portal to participate in the scheduled vaccinations.
