Assam Worker Allegedly Assaulted at Arunachal NH Site Over Advance Pay
Tension has erupted at a highway construction site in Hunli, Lower Dibang Valley district of Arunachal Pradesh after several labourers from Assam alleged they were assaulted by company personnel following a request for a wage advance, according to reports. The road project is being executed under the National Highways and Infrastructure Development Corporation Limited (NHIDCL) and carried out by private contractor Jhandu Infratech.
The episode began when a labourer approached the managing director’s office seeking an advance of Rs 10,000, saying he needed the money for urgent medical treatment for his mother in his home village in Assam. Workers say the request was denied, which led to a heated confrontation.
Fellow labourers allege that the first worker was then attacked by four to five men, suffering injuries to his head and ears. The accounts describe the assault as unprovoked and severe enough to require medical attention.
The situation reportedly worsened when another worker went to the office to ask why his colleague had been beaten. Co-workers say he was also assaulted and sustained a serious head injury. Their supervisor, who intervened, was allegedly attacked by a group of four men during the same incident.
Most of the affected labourers at the site are from Assam. They have demanded immediate payment of pending wages and justice, stressing that they rely on daily earnings to support their families.
The injured workers have reportedly sought intervention from Assam Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma, urging the state government to investigate the matter and ensure their safety and rightful payment.
The incident has renewed concerns about labour conditions and worker safety at large infrastructure projects in remote parts of the Northeast. Authorities are yet to issue an official statement on the allegations, while workers continue to press for accountability and action against those involved.
