Meghalaya Class 12 Exams Postponed After West Garo Hills Poll Clashes
The Meghalaya Board of School Education on March 11 postponed two class 12 HSSLC papers in West Garo Hills after clashes between tribal and non-tribal groups over the nomination process for local council polls turned violent, leading authorities to impose curfew and call in the Army. Two people were killed in police firing during the unrest, officials said.
The music paper scheduled for March 11 and the anthropology paper scheduled for March 12 have been cancelled for West Garo Hills only. “The HSSLC examinations, scheduled for March 11 (Music) and March 12 (Anthropology), stand cancelled for West Garo Hills only. The same shall be rescheduled for some other dates to be notified later,” Meghalaya Board of School Education’s Director Accreditation and Controller of Examinations T.R. Laloo said.
Examinations in the rest of the state will continue as per schedule, the board added. Over 29,000 students are appearing for this year’s Higher Secondary School Leaving Certificate Examination conducted by the board.
The decision to defer the papers in West Garo Hills was taken as a precaution to ensure the safety of students and examination staff amid a volatile situation in parts of the district, Laloo said.
Government measures to restore order included imposing curfew and deploying the Army following the incidents of violence and the deaths in police firing, an official said.
