CM Sarma Inaugurates Assam’s Longest Flyover — A Landmark Day
Assam Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma on Tuesday, March 10, inaugurated the Maharaj Prithu Flyover — the state’s longest — linking New Guwahati with Dighalipukhuri in the heart of Guwahati, a move aimed at easing traffic congestion and improving connectivity across key parts of the city.
The new flyover is being billed as a major infrastructure milestone for Assam’s capital and is expected to shorten travel times and streamline movement between eastern and central areas of Guwahati. Officials say it will strengthen connectivity along busy corridors and boost overall urban mobility.
To allow citizens to experience the structure, certain stretches will be temporarily opened as walking zones for three days. Two sections, from Chandmari to Guwahati Club, will remain designated pedestrian areas during this period, the chief minister said at the ceremony.
Authorities also announced plans to connect the Ulubari and Guwahati Club flyovers to ensure smoother vehicular movement across the city’s central areas. Officials clarified there will be no restrictions on heavy vehicles using the Maharaj Prithu Flyover, allowing uninterrupted traffic flow after the opening.
At the inauguration, Sarma also announced that land pattas will be granted to nearly 12,000 families living in Guwahati’s hilly areas, a measure intended to provide legal land rights and long-sought security to residents. He said the initiative reflects the government’s commitment to upgrading urban infrastructure while addressing residents’ longstanding demands over land ownership.
The ceremony was attended by several ministers, senior officials and local residents who gathered to witness the opening of the landmark project. – IANS
