GHADC Election Breakthrough: Shocking Garo Hills Results Explained
The Garo Hills Autonomous District Council (GHADC) election, scheduled for April 10, has come under scrutiny after nomination filings raised questions about the tribal status of several candidates, prompting the District Council Affairs (DCA) Department to intervene, DCA Commissioner and Secretary C.V.D. Diengdoh said in Shillong. Authorities say the challenges to candidate eligibility have led to coordinated steps to verify claims and maintain law-and-order ahead of polling.
At a meeting in Sombar, DCA officials joined the West Garo Hills Deputy Commissioner and district commissioners from Garo Hills to review nomination papers and discuss a response plan. The review followed the filing of nominations at the Tura Deputy Commissioner’s office, where Phulbari MLA S.G. Esmatur Momin and an independent candidate were among those who submitted papers and where objections were reportedly raised.
Diengdoh said district commissioners have been instructed to engage local leaders, youth groups and peace committees to contain tensions and ensure a calm environment during the pre-election period. He added that the Superintendent of Police, together with other government agencies, will put in place necessary security arrangements to prevent disturbances related to the nominations and the election process.
The DCA chief also clarified procedural steps: any candidate whose nomination is rejected will have that decision formally reported by the Deputy Commissioner to the DCA. The GHADC Executive Committee will verify Scheduled Tribe (ST) certificates submitted by candidates, and the department will take action against fraudulent claims. If disputes persist or legal clarity is required, the DCA will consider approaching the Meghalaya High Court, Diengdoh said.
