Heartfelt Iftar: Zohran Mamdani and Vikas Khanna Reunite at Iconic Bungalow, Celebrating Decades of Friendship
New York City Mayor Zohran Mamdani recently celebrated Iftar at Bungalow, an acclaimed Manhattan restaurant helmed by celebrated Indian chef Vikas Khanna. This gathering held special significance for both men, rooted in a past encounter that dates back over two decades.
Khanna took to Instagram to reflect on their history, revealing that he first met Mamdani when the future mayor was just eight years old. Accompanying his mother, filmmaker Mira Nair, Mamdani visited the Tribeca restaurant where Khanna had begun to establish himself following a challenging period marked by homelessness and a difficult job transition. “I had just survived homelessness and left a very abusive job,” Khanna shared. “I started working at Salaam Bombay restaurant in Tribeca, a name I cherished because it was also the title of my favorite film by Mira Nair. One day, Mira walked in with her very young son, Zohran.”
Fast-forward to the present, and Mamdani, who was elected to lead New York City earlier this year, broke his fast in the traditional manner during Iftar, starting with a date before enjoying a full meal personally prepared by Khanna. The restaurant curated a special “Table of Grace” for the occasion, which featured items of cultural and religious significance, including Islamic prayer beads, henna cones, Muslim prayer caps, and ittar bottles, all elegantly arranged alongside the restaurant’s signature fresh flowers and candles.
Khanna expressed deep appreciation for Nair’s support during his early days in New York, calling her “one of the most supportive humans” he encountered. Over the years, he has had the privilege of catering several of her events. The reunion during Iftar was a poignant reminder of how far they have both come. “And today, 25+ years later, I had the honor of cooking for that same young boy — now a global leader shaping the future of New York City,” Khanna wrote.
In his closing remarks, he addressed Mayor Mamdani directly: “Thank you for celebrating Iftar with us today. Cooking for you was deeply personal 25 years ago — and it feels even more meaningful today.”
Bungalow, which has quickly become one of New York’s sought-after dining destinations since its opening in recent years, continues to attract a steady stream of notable patrons alongside a diverse clientele, further solidifying its reputation in the city’s culinary landscape.
This heartfelt reunion at Iftar not only symbolizes the strength of community but also highlights the enduring connections formed through shared experiences, all woven together by food and friendship.
