Excitement in Kolkata as CEC Gyanesh Kumar Arrives to Propel Election Preparedness in Two Dynamic Days!
Chief Election Commissioner Gyanesh Kumar arrived in Kolkata on March 8, 2026, for a three-day visit focused on preparations for the upcoming Assembly elections in West Bengal. With the polls set to take place in the next two months, Mr. Kumar is leading a full bench from the Election Commission of India (ECI) to assess the state’s electoral readiness.
During his visit, CEC Kumar will engage with officials from the West Bengal government as well as political party representatives. A key meeting is scheduled for March 9 at 10 a.m., where delegates from eight recognized political parties will meet with Mr. Kumar and the full commission. Each party has been allotted a 15-minute slot to present their views and concerns regarding the electoral process.
Later that same day, ECI officials will meet with high-ranking state officials, including senior police officers, Superintendents of Police, and District Magistrates. This meeting aims to ensure comprehensive coordination for the forthcoming elections and to address logistical and security preparations.
In an important development earlier this year, the ECI published the electoral rolls for West Bengal on February 28, confirming a voter base of approximately 7.04 crore. This release followed a meticulous four-month process known as Special Intensive Revision (SIR). Notably, around 60 lakh voters are currently under judicial review, as mandated by the Supreme Court, which directed the involvement of judicial officers in this scrutiny.
A pressing issue remains whether the names of all 60 lakh electors can be cleared before the election dates are officially announced. West Bengal’s Chief Electoral Officer, Manoj Kumar Agarwal, indicated that supplementary electoral rolls will soon be issued, featuring the names of voters whose eligibility has been affirmed by judicial officers.
The ECI has also scheduled a press conference for March 10, where further details and updates regarding the electoral process will be shared. As preparations ramp up, the focus will be on ensuring a fair and transparent electoral process in West Bengal, with all stakeholders keenly observing how the situation unfolds in the lead-up to the elections.
