CM Launches Urgent Recruitment: 500 Police Constables, 20% Reservation
Chief Minister Prem Singh Tamang‑Golay announced a recruitment drive for about 500 police constable vacancies for the Sikkim Police while addressing the 18th Raising Day of the 3rd Indian Reserve Battalion (3rd IRBn) at the battalion headquarters in Manglay, South Sikkim on Friday, March 6, 2026. He said the move is the first major constable intake since the SKM government took office and outlined measures on gender representation, reservations and infrastructure support for the battalion.
Golay said the recruitment will initially target 30% women and 70% men-citing operational constraints that currently limit women’s deployment in some IRB and Sikkim Armed Police (SAP) roles-but pledged the government’s long‑term aim of achieving a 50:50 gender balance. He also announced a 20% seat reservation for returning Indian Army Agniveer personnel. The chief minister noted that newly created Sub‑Inspector posts are already in training and that recruitment and training for Deputy Superintendent of Police (DSP) positions are underway; he praised two DSP trainees who recently delivered strong presentations.
Earlier in the day Golay inaugurated the Teesta Command Block (new ADM building) on the battalion premises and responded to 3rd IRBn requests by promising improvements including fencing, a swimming pool, a multipurpose hall, a gymnasium and a firing range. He framed the Raising Day as a celebration for the whole state, noting the battalion’s national contributions and the Sikkim Police’s recognition: “The Sikkim Police was honoured with the 15th prestigious President’s Colour, also known as Nishaan, in January 2026,” he said, adding that the force won several medals in 2025.
To strengthen operational capability and fairness, Golay said 55 vehicles across heavy, medium and light categories will be provided to police personnel and that paperwork will be carried out in the name of individual personnel rather than in the department’s name. He emphasized discipline and the symbolic value of uniform: “The uniform is your identity, so do not misuse it,” he told officers.
Director General of Police Akshay Sachdeva thanked the chief minister for the vehicles and highlighted the importance of health, fitness, knowledge, modern technology and AI‑based tools. Commanding Officer Rinzing Chopel Rai presented the 3rd IRBn’s achievements, and DSP Bikash Basnett delivered the welcome address.
The Raising Day programme featured a Mountain Warrior challenge, anti‑riot and UAC demonstrations, a zumba session, cultural performances by the 3rd IRBn, PTC Yangang and SAP Pangthang, and inter‑branch football finals in which both finalist teams received cash prizes of Rs 2 lakh each. Twenty‑two students were presented cheques under various Chief Minister education schemes, and Golay encouraged police participation in the upcoming Kalakar Bharosa Sammelan, where personnel engaged in arts and culture will be honoured.
