Arunachal Govt Tightens Markets: One-Day Rule to Curb Illegal Entry
The Arunachal Pradesh government has ordered that weekly markets in the state be held only once a week to regulate vendor participation and address concerns over unauthorised entry. An order from the Home Department designates Saturday as the sole day for weekly markets in the Itanagar Capital Region and Papum Pare district.
The decision was taken at a meeting chaired by the state’s Home Minister to consider issues raised by local groups, including the All Papum Pare Youth Organisation and the All Nyishi Youth Organisation. Officials told reporters that markets previously operated on multiple days, which they say encouraged repeated participation by non-local vendors and raised the possibility of unauthorised immigrants entering market areas.
Authorities also cited revenue losses to the state from the multiplicity of market days. The Home Department order directs Deputy Commissioners in all other districts to select one specific day each week for their local weekly markets.
The directive, issued by the Commissioner (Home), instructs district administrations to implement the order immediately and to ensure that weekly markets are strictly limited to the designated single day in accordance with the notification.
