Intense Negotiations Unfold in MVA as BJP Reveals Shock List of Four Candidates for Rajya Sabha: Power Play Intensifies!
Union minister Ramdas Athawale and three other candidates have been nominated by the BJP for the Maharashtra Rajya Sabha elections scheduled for March 16, 2026. The party revealed its list on March 4, 2026, which also includes senior BJP figure Vinod Tawde, Maya Invate, and Ramrao Wadkute. This announcement comes just a day before the deadline for filing nominations, intensifying the political climate in the state.
As the clock ticks down, the Maha Vikas Aghadi (MVA) has yet to reach a consensus on its candidate. While the MVA coalition partners, including the NCP, Shiv Sena, and Congress, have been in discussions, no decision has been made. “Congress and Shiv Sena will sit together with us. We will take a decision thereafter. All of us insist that Pawar saab should be in Delhi for the MVA and for NCP(SP),” said NCP(SP) State President Jayant Patil on March 4.
The NCP is keen on endorsing Sharad Pawar, the sitting Rajya Sabha member whose term ends next month. Pawar’s party is adamant that his candidacy is pivotal for securing an unopposed election in Maharashtra. However, ambiguity remains as Patil refrained from commenting on whether the BJP would adjust its candidate count if Pawar submits his nomination.
Shiv Sena UBT leader Aaditya Thackeray echoed this sentiment, stating that no final decision had been reached on the candidate front. The party is keen to assert its claim over the Rajya Sabha seat, while also expressing that collaboration among the opposition parties is essential.
Interestingly, NCP’s Parth Pawar, the son of late NCP leader Ajit Pawar and Maharashtra Deputy Chief Minister Sunetra Pawar, is expected to file his nomination on March 5. The decisions made in the coming hours are crucial, as the MVA may secure only one candidate based on its current strength, while the ruling Mahayuti could potentially nominate six candidates based on the existing agreement between their alliance members.
With seven seats up for grabs and 37 total across 10 states participating in the elections, the stakes are high. If more than seven candidates are nominated, elections will occur on March 16. This situation poses a significant test for the MVA’s unity and collaborative strength.
Amidst these political maneuvers, Sharad Pawar is scheduled for discharge from a city hospital, adding another layer of complexity to the ongoing negotiations. The State Congress leadership is advocating for the Rajya Sabha seat to be allocated to its faction, yet many party leaders appear to be leaning toward supporting Sharad Pawar should he decide to contest.
In summary, the political landscape in Maharashtra is rapidly evolving, with the BJP positioning itself strategically while the MVA grapples with consensus-building. As nominations are finalized, all eyes are on the evolving dynamics, particularly regarding the role of seasoned political figures like Sharad Pawar. The countdown to the Rajya Sabha elections intensifies, underscoring the importance of alliances and leadership in the state’s political arena.
The deadline for filing nominations is March 5, 2026, leaving little time for the MVA to solidify its strategy in this increasingly competitive race.
