যোগেন মহনৰ বাসগৃহৰ সন্মুখত হাজাৰ হাজাৰ কৰ্মীৰ তীব্র প্ৰতিবাদ
Central BJP leaders’ decision to name cabinet minister Jogen Mohan as a Rajya Sabha candidate has triggered fresh unrest in the Mahmora constituency of Charaideo district, where thousands of party workers and supporters gathered outside the minister’s Moran residence on Tuesday night to protest and demand the withdrawal of his nomination. Protesters said they want Mohan to remain the constituency’s MLA rather than move to the Upper House.
The central BJP on Tuesday announced candidates for two of Assam’s three Rajya Sabha seats, naming Duliajan MLA Terash Gowala and Mahmora MLA and minister Jogen Mohan. The decision angered rank-and-file workers in Mahmora, who said the party acted against Mohan’s expressed wishes and against local expectations ahead of the upcoming assembly election.
At the sit-in outside Mohan’s home, several protesters told reporters: “Jogen Mohan is our guardian. Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma himself had come and announced that Jogen Mohan would be the MLA of Mahmora constituency. Why this decision now? The Chief Minister must keep the promise he made before women.” The demonstrators staged a sit-in strike through the night to press their demand.
Earlier on Tuesday morning, Jogen Mohan told the media that he did not want to contest a Rajya Sabha seat. “At the moment I am not interested in the Rajya Sabha. I give more importance to staying with the people of the constituency. I have informed the high command that much work remains to be done for the people here. Where the party positions me is the party’s decision, but I want to work in the constituency and fulfil the promises made to the people,” he said. After the evening announcement of his candidature, Mohan has been largely unavailable to the press.
A prominent leader from the Ahom community, Jogen Mohan won the Mahmora assembly seat in 2016 and 2021, repeatedly defeating Congress candidates. He has held several important cabinet portfolios from the Sarbananda Sonowal government through to the present Himanta Biswa Sarma administration. Party workers’ objections to his Rajya Sabha nomination have created an uneasy atmosphere within the ruling party as the state heads into a crucial assembly poll.
