Gangtok Hosts 49th Central Advisory Meeting on Critical Food Safety
The 49th meeting of the Central Advisory Committee (CAC) of the Food Safety and Standards Authority of India was held in Gangtok on March 2, marking the first time Sikkim hosted the national gathering of food-safety regulators. Sikkim Health Secretary Tshewang Gyachho said the state was honoured to convene the high-level discussions aimed at strengthening food safety across India.
Gyachho told reporters that the primary objective of the meeting was “to reaffirm the collective resolve of the national food regulator and State/UT authorities to build a stronger, enforcement-led and consumer-centric food safety ecosystem.” Commissioners of Food Safety and senior officials from multiple states and union territories attended to deliberate on practical measures for enforcement.
Discussions focused on ensuring the availability of safe and wholesome food to citizens nationwide, with particular attention to strengthening on-ground enforcement in high-risk food categories. Delegates reviewed ways to improve compliance standards, enhance surveillance systems and boost coordination among regulatory bodies to secure effective implementation of food safety laws.
Participants exchanged best practices and ideas to support state and UT authorities in enforcement and consumer protection. Gyachho emphasised that hosting the CAC meeting reflects Sikkim’s commitment to maintaining high standards of public health and food safety, and said the dialogue would “further empower States and Union Territories in strengthening food safety measures nationwide.”
The meeting underlined a shared emphasis on enforcement, surveillance and inter-agency cooperation as key priorities for FSSAI and state regulators moving forward.
