Urgent Report: Exposing Devastating Air and Water Pollution by Panipat’s Textile Recycling Industry

In a revealing report released by the Foundation for MSME Clusters (FMC) on Thursday, the global textile recycling powerhouse of Panipat, recognized for contributing approximately ₹30,000 crore in exports, comes under scrutiny for its environmental practices. With employment figures exceeding 400,000, where nearly a third of the workforce is comprised of women, the region is a vital hub in the textile recycling industry. However, the report highlights significant challenges due to the absence of standardized waste management protocols across the cluster.

The “Panipat Textile Recycling – Sustainability Readiness Report” outlines various types of waste generated throughout the recycling and processing stages, including fiber residues, dye sludge, boiler ash, packaging plastics, and contaminated non-recyclables. Each category presents unique environmental management hurdles, demanding immediate attention and action.

The lack of a comprehensive waste management framework has led to informal practices, such as open burning and indiscriminate disposal of industrial waste. This negligence not only poses risks to local air and water quality but also undermines the sustainability efforts within the industry. As pollution levels rise, the health of both the environment and the communities reliant on these resources hangs in the balance.

Professionals and stakeholders within the textile sector are now urged to rethink operational practices to incorporate sustainable solutions that align with environmental standards. By establishing systematic tracking and disposal methods, Panipat has the potential to transform waste into valuable resources, further solidifying its role in the global textile recycling landscape.

The findings from the FMC’s report serve not just as a wake-up call but also as an opportunity for stakeholders to invest in better waste management and recycling technologies. These changes could ultimately enhance the region’s reputation, attract eco-conscious investments, and foster sustainable job growth, especially among women who comprise a significant portion of the labor force.

As the industry grapples with the dual responsibility of meeting demand while maintaining environmental integrity, the collaborative effort of government, business owners, and local communities will be vital. By embracing innovative waste management strategies, Panipat can not only improve its environmental outcomes but also pave the way for a more sustainable and resilient textile recycling industry.

In summary, although Panipat stands as a leader in textile recycling with substantial economic contributions and employment opportunities, it must confront its environmental challenges head-on. Fostering sustainable practices will be essential to ensuring the region’s long-term viability and health by reducing pollution and preserving local water and air quality for future generations.
