Shocking Survey Reveals: Older Adults with Chronic Health Conditions Suffer Devastating Impact from Shingles
A recent survey has shed light on the significant toll of shingles among older adults in India struggling with chronic health conditions. The study, commissioned by GSK, reveals that 43% of participants with a history of shingles reported experiencing severe pain that disrupts their daily lives. Moreover, over one-third of those afflicted reported that shingles hindered their ability to work or participate in social events.
Shingles, caused by the reactivation of the Varicella zoster virus-the same virus responsible for chickenpox-typically manifests as a rash accompanied by painful blisters on one side of the body, often affecting the chest, abdomen, or face. The only effective prevention method is through vaccination.
The survey involved 752 Indian adults between ages 50 and 70, all diagnosed with chronic conditions such as cardiovascular diseases, chronic kidney disease, and diabetes. Shalini Menon, executive vice-president of GSK India, highlighted that age-related declines in immunity coupled with the prevalence of these chronic diseases-influencing approximately 7.5 crore older Indians-renders them more susceptible to shingles. She made these observations during Shingles Action Week, observed from February 23 to March 1.
The findings indicate that individuals with chronic kidney disease and cardiovascular conditions experience the most significant disruptions due to shingles, while those with diabetes and cardiovascular diseases report the highest emotional distress. Alarmingly, nearly one in four respondents demonstrated a lack of understanding about shingles. Despite about 75% stating they regularly visit their healthcare providers, almost half-48%—have never engaged in discussions about shingles with their doctors. Furthermore, one-fifth of the participants believed that their chronic health conditions do not affect their immune systems or increase their risk for shingles.
Dr. Menon emphasized that vaccination is crucial for protecting older adults from this preventable disease. The survey underscores a critical gap in awareness regarding the relationship between chronic illnesses and immune health, particularly among older populations. She advocated for ongoing, informed dialogues between patients and healthcare providers about adult vaccinations.
As the survey results reveal a concerning lack of awareness, it becomes clear that more education is needed for both patients and healthcare professionals. Initiating these conversations could lead to better health outcomes and promote healthier aging for millions of individuals living with chronic conditions.
