CM Urges Centre to Prioritise Imphal Elevated Highway, Rs 12,000cr
Manipur Chief Minister Yumnam Khemchand Singh met Union Road Transport and Highways Minister Nitin Gadkari in New Delhi on Tuesday to seek priority for an elevated highway in Imphal and fast-tracked strengthening of the state’s national highways. Singh pressed for urgent action to ease mounting traffic congestion in the capital and for central support on large-scale upgrades across the state.
According to an official statement from the Chief Minister’s Secretariat, Singh reviewed the status of ongoing and proposed road infrastructure projects with Gadkari and urged the Union Ministry to prioritise construction of an elevated corridor in Imphal as a congestion-relief measure.
The Chief Minister also sought expedited consideration of a proposed Rs 12,000-crore project to strengthen and upgrade 1,774 km of national highways in Manipur, with completion targeted by 2026–27.
Gadkari, the statement said, assured Singh of “all possible assistance” from his ministry and added that the proposals submitted by the state government would be looked at positively.
Singh was accompanied to the meeting by Deputy Chief Ministers Nemcha Kipgen of the Bharatiya Janata Party and Losii Dikho of the Naga People’s Front.
The meeting was Singh’s first interaction with Gadkari after he assumed office as Chief Minister on February 4, the statement noted.
