Tragic Nepal Bus Accident: 18 Lives Lost as Passenger Bus Plunges into River in Dhading, Heartbreaking Injuries Follow
At least 18 people have tragically lost their lives, and more than two dozen others were injured after a passenger bus plunged into the Trishuli River in Nepal’s Dhading district early Monday morning. The bus was en route from Pokhara to Kathmandu when it fell into the river near Gajuri along the Prithvi Highway at approximately 1:15-1:30 AM. The incident occurred near Chinadhara, within ward 3 of Benighat Rorang Rural Municipality, about 90 kilometers west of Kathmandu.
According to Shishir Thapa, Chief of the District Traffic Police Office in Dhading, the death toll currently stands at 18, as reported by the Kathmandu Post. Bishnu Prasad Bhatta, spokesperson for the Armed Police Force, confirmed that 17 bodies have been retrieved from the scene, while 28 injured passengers have been rescued from the wreckage of the bus. Rajkumar Thakuri, chair of the Highway Rescue Management Committee, noted that those injured have been transported to various hospitals for immediate medical attention.
Rescue operations have been significantly challenged due to the nighttime conditions, with assistance coming from the Nepal Army, Armed Police Force, Nepal Police, and local volunteers. Among the deceased is a male passenger from New Zealand, and both a Japanese woman and a Dutch woman have been reported among the injured. The exact cause of the accident remains under investigation, but authorities suspect that speeding may have contributed to the tragedy.
As rescue efforts continue, the community mourns the loss of life in this devastating incident, and further updates are expected as officials gather more information. The situation underscores the need for increased road safety measures in a region renowned for its challenging travel conditions.
