Saiyami Kher: Why Portraying Vulnerability Is More Challenging
Mumbai, February 23 (IANS) — Actress Saiyami Kher says she will be revealing a softer, more vulnerable side in filmmaker Vikram Phadnis’s upcoming, untitled social drama, a departure from the physically demanding roles that have defined much of her career. The film also features actor Tahir Raj Bhasin.
Saiyami told IANS that the role appealed to her because it focuses on internal emotional journeys rather than external action. “I’ve played characters that are physically very demanding for a long time, and those roles have shaped me a lot as an actor. This film is very different. It’s softer, more emotional, and relies heavily on internal journeys rather than external action,” she said.
She added that exploring vulnerability presents its own challenges. “That was what attracted me to it. Sometimes portraying vulnerability is far more challenging, and I was keen to explore that space again,” Saiyami said, explaining her reasons for signing on.
Saiyami has recently wrapped shooting for Haiwaan, which stars Akshay Kumar and Saif Ali Khan and is directed by Priyadarshan. The film, which also features Sharib Hashmi, was shot in locations including Kochi, Ooty and Mumbai and went on floors in August this year; it marks the reunion of Akshay and Saif after 18 years.
On the big screen, Saiyami was last seen in Jaat, directed by Gopichand Malineni. Jaat features Sunny Deol, Randeep Hooda, Regena Cassandrra, Vineet Kumar Singh and Saiyami Kher in pivotal roles, supported by Ramya Krishnan, Jagapathi Babu, Prashant Bajaj, Zarina Wahab, P. Ravi Shankar and Babloo Prithiveeraj. The film follows a mysterious passenger whose obsessive demand for an apology brings him into conflict with a ruthless labourer-turned-crime boss, triggering a violent confrontation.
Born in Maharashtra, Saiyami-whose elder sister is also a Marathi actress-made her acting debut with the Telugu film Rey in 2015 and entered Hindi cinema with Rakeysh Omprakash Mehra’s Mirzya in 2016, which also featured Harshvardhan Kapoor. She has since appeared in films such as Mauli, Choked, Wild Dog and Ghoomer, and in streaming series including Special OPS and Faadu.
