Early 2026: Severe Rainfall Deficit Threatens All Districts
Guwahati: Sikkim has recorded a widespread and significant rainfall shortfall in the opening weeks of 2026, with all districts reporting precipitation well below normal, according to data released by the Meteorological Centre in Gangtok under the India Meteorological Department (IMD). The cumulative rainfall analysis for January 1 to February 21, 2026, shows a severe departure from expected levels, indicating an extended dry spell across the state.
The district-wise figures place every district in categories ranging from “deficient” to “no-rain,” underscoring the scale of the deficit reported by meteorological officials. Forecasters have not identified any immediate wet system likely to produce enough rainfall to substantially reduce the shortfall in the near term.
Weather and climate experts warn that prolonged winter dryness can have cascading impacts. Reduced soil moisture and falling local water reserves increase the risk to crops, limit drinking water availability, and heighten the danger of forest and grassland fires, especially in vulnerable high-altitude and rural communities that rely heavily on seasonal rains.
Agricultural livelihoods could be particularly hard hit if the deficit persists into the pre-monsoon months, affecting sowing, early crop stages and water-dependent pastoral activities. Communities dependent on springs, streams and small reservoirs may face tightened water access as local sources deplete.
State authorities say they are closely monitoring hydrological conditions and environmental risks. Relevant departments are tracking water storage, soil moisture and fire-prone areas as Sikkim moves toward the pre-monsoon season, while contingency measures and advisories remain on standby.
The IMD data and official assessments signal mounting concern about the potential long-term impacts of the rainfall shortage if normal precipitation patterns are not restored in the coming weeks.
