About 2,000 residents of Fakirtilla village in Sharifnagar, Sribhumi district, have threatened to boycott the upcoming assembly election, accusing long-standing politicians and the administration of neglect that has left the area without basic infrastructure. Villagers say their patience ran out after years of supporting their elected representative, yet seeing no meaningful development in roads, drinking water and emergency access.
Locals recall that Kamalaksha De Purkayastha, who was elected three times from the former North Karimganj constituency, once enjoyed broad support here. But after delimitation placed Fakirtilla in the South Karimganj constituency, residents say the village has become a visible example of stalled development and administrative indifference, lacking even basic inter-village connectivity.
The practical consequences are severe. There are no all-weather roads into the village, and clean drinking water remains scarce. During the monsoon, floodwaters from the Langai river wash away the mud tracks, cutting Fakirtilla off from neighboring areas. Schoolchildren, daily wage earners and patients in need of urgent medical care face acute hardship when transport is impossible. With no reliable source of potable water, many villagers are forced to drink unsafe water.
Anger has been compounded by accusations about their representative’s priorities. Villagers allege that after offering support to the BJP government, De Purkayastha concentrated development efforts on Katigora in Cachar district to secure his political future over the past two years, leaving his core supporters neglected.
Feeling betrayed by both their elected representative and the state, villagers say they have collected funds themselves to repair the mud roads-work they contend the government should have done long ago. “This time we will look for a capable candidate regardless of party,” one group of residents said, and they warn that if long-standing demands for roads and clean water are not met, they will completely boycott the next assembly election.
The threat from Fakirtilla highlights a wider gap between electoral promises and ground realities ahead of the vote. Whether this show of collective anger will compel authorities to act or become another pre-election headline remains to be seen.
