SHRC Takes Bold Action: Suo Motu Case Launched Over Dangerous Potholes Endangering Lives!

The Chairperson of the State Human Rights Commission (SHRC), Alexander Thomas, has issued directives to civic authorities in Thrikkakara to address critical safety concerns on local roadways. In a recent statement, Thomas emphasized the urgent need to repair potholes on both the Chembumukku Civil Line-Attipetti Nagar Road and SA Road, following reports of hazards from the community.

Along with the repair work, the Commission urged the installation of warning boards and reflectors at the Chembumukku site, highlighting the need for increased visibility to protect pedestrians and drivers alike. The municipal secretary has been tasked not only with ensuring these repairs are executed swiftly but also with submitting a report detailing the actions taken.

In parallel, Thomas called upon the Kochi Corporation secretary to prioritize filling a dangerous pothole located near the Kadavanthra metro station along SA Road. He stressed the importance of public safety, advocating for handrails to be put in place to prevent potential accidents, along with additional warning signage if necessary. The Corporation secretary has been given a week to report back on the remedial measures implemented.

The Commission also noted that the absence of drainage slabs situated between the Edappally Canal and St. Michael’s Church parish hall along Chembumukku Civil Line-Attipetti Nagar Road poses significant risks to local residents and students from a nearby school. These concerns were addressed suo motu by the Commission, prompted by media coverage highlighting the issue.

As infrastructure safety remains a pressing concern, the SHRC is taking a proactive stance in ensuring that local authorities prioritize public welfare in their operations. Residents are urged to stay informed about these developments and to communicate any further safety concerns to local officials, as community vigilance is essential in addressing these ongoing challenges.

By taking these significant steps, the SHRC aims to foster a safer environment for all road users in the region. The upcoming reports from the municipal and Corporation secretaries will shed further light on the actions taken and the timeline for these vital improvements.

This initiative underscores the Commission’s commitment to human rights and public safety, reinforcing the expectation that local authorities will act decisively to protect the community. The groundwork laid by these directives is a crucial move towards enhancing the infrastructure and safety measures that directly impact the lives of the citizens in the region.

As developments unfold, residents in Kerala are encouraged to monitor local news for updates on the progress of these repairs and any new initiatives aimed at improving road safety and accessibility across the state.
