Kokrajhar Outrage: Villagers Assault Suspected Cattle Thief
A suspected cattle thief was caught and allegedly beaten by villagers while trying to steal a cow at Ketengajhar near Nayekgaon in Assam’s Kokrajhar district on the night of February 21. The accused has been identified as Kajimuddin Sheikh, also known as Kazimuddin Sk, son of Moynal Haque of Santoshpur village under Chapar police station in Dhubri district. Villagers detained him before police reached the scene and he was later taken to Kokrajhar Medical College and Hospital for treatment.
According to local accounts, a three-member group arrived at the home of Joynandan Oraon in a small car with the apparent aim of stealing cattle. One person reportedly remained inside the vehicle, another stood guard on the road, and a third entered the cowshed, tied a cow and attempted to drag it away.
A group of village youths who had come out to chase jackals noticed the movement and intervened. On seeing them, one suspect fled in the vehicle and another slipped away into the darkness, while the third was caught by residents. Villagers say the detained man was assaulted before police could rescue him from the mob.
Residents of Ketengajhar say cattle thefts have surged in recent weeks, alleging nearly 20 cows have been stolen from the locality alone. They also claimed that three cows were recently taken from the cowshed of village head Sanjay Oraon. Locals are urging the police administration to step up patrolling and take strict action against alleged cattle theft gangs operating in the area.
