Shillong MP’s Final Farewell Today at Sumer — Nation Mourns
The mortal remains of Shillong MP Ricky Andrew J. Syngkon will be laid to rest at Sumer Presbyterian Church Cemetery in Ri-Bhoi district on Saturday, days after the 54-year-old VPP founding member suffered a sudden cardiac arrest while playing futsal on the outskirts of the city. Syngkon was taken to Dr H. Gordon Roberts Hospital in Shillong but was pronounced dead at about 8:42 pm, according to family sources, after medical staff attempted resuscitation.
A prayer service was held earlier at Pohkseh, where his body was taken following his collapse, and large numbers of supporters, party workers and residents queued to pay their respects. His remains were escorted from Pohkseh to his residence in Nongsder, Ri-Bhoi, by senior VPP leaders, party MLAs, MDCs and a large procession of mourners who lined the convoy route.
Chief Minister Conrad K. Sangma visited the late MP’s residence at Pohkseh on Friday, accompanied by his wife and Gambegre MLA Mehtab Chandee, and conveyed his condolences to Syngkon’s family. Several state ministers and legislators also called on the bereaved family. The Meghalaya Legislative Assembly adjourned its Budget session after leaders paid tribute; Sangma led the obituary reference, calling Syngkon a representative of the entire state and saying his sudden death left a deep void that would be hard to fill.
In a mark of respect, the state government declared a public holiday on Saturday across the seven districts within the Shillong Parliamentary constituency — East Khasi Hills, West Khasi Hills, South West Khasi Hills, Eastern West Khasi Hills, East Jaintia Hills, West Jaintia Hills and Ri-Bhoi — to allow people to attend the funeral. Syngkon, known for his humble demeanour, grassroots engagement and principled politics, had won the Shillong Lok Sabha seat in the 2024 election by a large margin, defeating veteran Congress leader Vincent H. Pala. His sudden passing has prompted widespread grief across Meghalaya.
