Shillong Declares Feb 21 Holiday in Tribute to MP Syngkon
The Meghalaya government has declared a public holiday on February 21, 2026, across the Shillong Parliamentary Constituency to honour the late Member of Parliament Ricky AJ Syngkon and to enable residents to attend his funeral, Chief Minister Conrad K. Sangma said. The holiday will cover all districts within the constituency to allow supporters, well-wishers and the general public to participate in funeral rites and pay their respects.
The date had previously been listed as a working day under compensatory holiday arrangements but will now be observed as a full holiday in tribute to the departed leader.
Syngkon, 54, who represented the Voice of the People Party (VPP), collapsed while playing football in Shillong and died on Thursday. He was first taken to the Community Health Centre in Mawiong and later shifted to Dr H. Gordon Roberts Hospital in Jaiaw. Doctors pronounced him dead at about 8.42 p.m.; suspected cardiac arrest was cited as the cause.
Prime Minister Narendra Modi expressed grief over Syngkon’s passing and recalled his contributions to public life. Chief Minister Sangma paid tribute to Syngkon as a compassionate leader committed to public service and the welfare of the people.
Proceedings of the Meghalaya Legislative Assembly were suspended on Friday as members mourned the legislator’s death. Speaker Thomas A. Sangma said the House would limit business to obituary references for the day and that a revised schedule of sittings would be issued subsequently.
The government’s holiday declaration aims to ensure that constituents across Shillong have the opportunity to attend funeral services and honour the late MP.
