Doomdooma, Feb 20 — Residents of the historic Ledo Maulang Khamti village in No. 83 Margherita Assembly Constituency, Tinsukia district, say they remain without basic infrastructure and development despite being only about 13 kilometres from Margherita town. The hamlet, home to 35 Tai Phakey families along with Adivasi and Gorkha residents who have lived there for generations, is reportedly cut off from key government schemes and civic amenities.
Villagers allege that over decades no significant development work has reached the settlement. They say essential facilities — all-weather roads, proper drainage, erosion control measures, housing under the Pradhan Mantri Awas Yojana (PMAY), and safe drinking water under the Jal Jeevan Mission — are yet to be implemented, leaving many households vulnerable.
The situation is acute during the monsoon, when floodwaters frequently submerge houses and compound residents’ hardship. Locals say repeated flooding has not prompted effective intervention from authorities, and they allege government representatives seldom visit to assess or address their plight.
With elections approaching, members of the local administration, including Margherita MLA Bhaskar Sharma, have carried out temporary repairs such as laying stones and gravel on parts of the village road. Villagers dismissed these efforts as “cosmetic” and said they fall far short of the long-term solutions needed.
The community has appealed to Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma to intervene and ensure comprehensive development of Ledo Maulang Khamti, specifically requesting properly graded roads, flood-protection works, PMAY housing allotments, and reliable drinking-water supply under the Jal Jeevan Mission.
For many residents, Independence Day and other civic celebrations feel hollow while they continue to wait for the basic amenities that large parts of the country now take for granted.
