Union Home Minister Amit Shah on Saturday, February 21, lauded the Central Reserve Police Force’s role in restoring peace to conflict-affected areas, particularly the Northeast, while addressing the CRPF’s 87th Raising Day Parade at the Arjun Bhogeswar Baruah Sports Complex in Sarusajai, Assam. Shah attended the parade on the second day of a two-day visit to the state; this was the first time Assam hosted the CRPF’s Raising Day Parade.
Praising the force’s personnel, Shah said CRPF jawans have made “significant sacrifices” for the nation, noting that 2,270 CRPF personnel have laid down their lives in the line of duty — including around 700 in the Northeast, 540 in Jammu and Kashmir, and 79 in Assam. He paid tribute to those losses while underscoring the force’s ongoing commitment to national security.
Shah said regions such as Jammu and Kashmir, Jharkhand and the Northeast were once considered major disturbed areas, but credited the security forces, including the CRPF, with bringing measurable improvements in the security situation. He highlighted the CRPF’s expansion from two battalions at its inception to 243 battalions today, with a strength of over 3.89 lakh personnel (about 389,000).
The Home Minister said the CRPF has been central to countering insurgency and Left-wing extremism and to responding to major security challenges across the country. He also acknowledged the contributions of other agencies, naming the Border Security Force and the Jammu and Kashmir Police for their roles in maintaining law and order in sensitive regions.
Shah’s presence at the parade and his remarks while in Assam underline the Centre’s emphasis on recognising security forces’ sacrifices and on the stabilization of previously disturbed areas. The Home Minister remains in Assam for official programmes and public events during the remainder of his two-day visit.
