Uber Bike Riders in Agartala Strike Over ‘Bike Saver’ Fare Cuts
App-based bike taxi riders in Agartala have announced an indefinite suspension of services from February 18, demanding the complete withdrawal of Uber’s lower-fare “Bike Saver” option, which they say has sharply reduced their earnings. The riders said they would keep services suspended until the company removes the service that they blame for their financial strain.
More than 200 Uber bikers gathered near Heritage Park to stage the protest and press their demands. Protesters cited falling incomes, rising operational costs and a lack of support from Uber’s local office at Banamalipur on BK Road as key reasons for the strike.
Speaking to the media, the riders alleged their daily takings fell markedly after the introduction of the “Bike Saver” fare. They said the reduced pricing model, combined with higher fuel bills and growing vehicle maintenance costs, has made it difficult to meet everyday expenses.
The bikers also pointed to worsening road conditions in several parts of the city because of ongoing Smart City project works. They said these damaged roads increase wear and tear on vehicles and add to operating costs, while the company has not offered adequate assistance.
Riders further claimed that Uber drivers in Tripura are paid significantly less than their counterparts in neighbouring states, a disparity they say compounds their financial problems. According to the protesters, repeated appeals to company representatives and local authorities have produced no concrete response.
The suspension is likely to disrupt daily commuters who rely on app-based bike taxis for low-cost, quick transport across the city. Riders say the move is aimed at forcing a reversal of the fare policy they regard as unsustainable for frontline bike taxi operators.
