Empowered Voices of Telangana: Municipal Chairpersons Elected, Councillors and Corporators Sworn In!
Congress candidate Kuna Vanitha has been unanimously elected as Chairperson of Sangareddy Municipality in the indirect elections held on Monday, February 16, 2026. Alongside her, Shaik Shafi Ahmed from the Congress party was elected as Vice-Chairperson. This election comes in the wake of the recent municipal polls held on February 11, where 2,996 wards across 116 municipalities and seven municipal corporations were contested. Results were declared on February 13 following a thorough counting process.
In Sangareddy Municipality, of the 28 wards, Congress secured a significant victory by winning 22, while the Bharat Rashtra Samithi claimed 10, the Bharatiya Janata Party managed two, and the All India Majlis-E-Ittehadul Muslimeen won one. Three wards went to independent candidates. The strong performance by Congress highlights its dominance in the region, which could shape future political dynamics in Telangana.
The Telangana State Election Commission has indicated that indirect elections for leadership positions in 11 remaining municipalities will take place on February 17, 2026. This decision followed a meticulous swearing-in ceremony for newly elected councilors and corporators across the state. The municipalities slated for indirect elections include Yellandu, Sultanabad, Ibrahimpatnam, Kagaznagar, Ketanapally, Khanapur, Zaheerabad, Indresham, Dornakal, Thorrur, and Jangaon.
The focus on these indirect elections stems from the ongoing negotiations between political parties and independent candidates who emerged victorious, amidst allegations of poaching due to the lack of a clear majority in 36 urban local bodies. Given the competitive nature of the recent electoral outcomes, the dynamics leading to the selections of mayors and chairpersons reflect a significant level of political maneuvering.
Under the provisions of The Telangana Municipalities Act 2019, elected officials serve a term of five years from the date of the inaugural meeting of the municipality following the elections. Interested citizens can access information regarding their local representatives, including chairpersons and vice-chairpersons, through the respective municipality websites. These links are provided on the Commissioner and Director of Municipal Administration (CDMA) web portal, which also features navigation tabs for easy access.
In Nirmal district, Congress candidates Appala Kavya and Appala Ganesh Chakravarthi were also elected as Chairperson and Vice-Chairperson of Nirmal Municipality, respectively. This further underscores Congress’s influence within the region and its ability to secure pivotal local leadership roles.
As the landscape of local governance continues to evolve in Telangana, the outcomes of these elections may set the stage for future political strategies and alliances. With leadership now firmly established in several municipalities, the focus will likely shift towards governance and addressing the needs of the constituents in these newly formed councils.
