Assam Youth Killed in Bengaluru Accident Sparks Migrant Death Concerns
A 25-year-old man from Barpathar in Bijni, Assam, died after being caught in a tile-making machine at a factory in Bengaluru on Friday, family members said. The victim, identified as Zubin Nath, was pronounced dead following the accident at SLV Granites, located at Machohalli Gate (No. 18) on Magadi Main Road, reportedly occurring around 11:30 am.
Family sources said they have been in contact with factory authorities, but it was unclear whether Nath’s body would be returned under the Assam government’s Shraddhanjali repatriation scheme; the family is reportedly making private arrangements. He is survived by his parents, his wife and their two-year-old daughter.
The incident adds to growing concern in Assam over fatalities among young migrant workers. The report comes a day after Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma, addressing a public programme in Udalguri, warned about a rising number of Assamese youths dying while working outside the State. Sarma said, “Every month, around 50 young boys reportedly die after leaving their homes in search of work. This is a painful reality,” and urged efforts to improve workplace safety and to create jobs at home.
Sarma also stressed that attracting industries and generating large-scale employment within Assam is the long-term solution to curb unsafe migration. The latest death follows earlier tragedies involving Assamese labourers in Bengaluru, including a case in which four youths died in a labour shed amid suspected suffocation.
The Assam government’s Shraddhanjali scheme was launched to provide logistical and financial support for repatriating the mortal remains of citizens who die outside the State due to accidents or other causes, ensuring families can bring their loved ones home with dignity.
