CM Sarma: No Anti-Incumbency in Assam; Ticket Tussles Spark Concern
Guwahati, Feb 10 — Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma on Tuesday dismissed talk of anti-incumbency ahead of the Assam Assembly elections, saying voters have already made up their minds and indicating confidence in the ruling coalition’s prospects. He made the remarks while distributing the first instalment under the Atmanirbhar Asom Abhijan 2.0 scheme at an event in Bongaigaon.
“Nobody has any such thoughts about whom to vote for or who will be the Chief Minister. People have already decided whom they will vote for and make victorious,” Sarma told reporters, while stopping short of directly predicting the Bharatiya Janata Party’s electoral outcome.
Sarma acknowledged that internal competition for party tickets could surface in a few constituencies but described it as limited. “There will be some tussle over candidature in a few seats, but not many,” he said, signalling that most nominations are expected to proceed smoothly.
Referring to post-delimitation Abhayapuri, Sarma said there may be several aspirants seeking tickets but that the party is currently proposing a BJP candidate from Abhayapuri and intends to keep the Bongaigaon seat for ally Asom Gana Parishad (AGP). He added that talks have already taken place with senior AGP leader Phani Bhusan Choudhury, although the seat-sharing arrangement has not been finalised.
On party discipline, Sarma defended the right of members to seek tickets while urging unity after decisions are made: “Everyone has the right to seek a ticket. Once the party finalises a candidate, others should accept it.” He framed acceptance as essential to avoid internal ruptures during the campaign.
Sarma sounded a cautionary note about Bilasipara, where he warned that factionalism within the BJP could jeopardise chances. “Looking at the kind of tussle BJP workers are creating among themselves, I would not like to believe that we will win Bilasipara,” he said, adding that the seat is difficult and that a lack of unity could lead to defeat. He warned some local leaders were “working towards political suicide,” and said those denied tickets might try to create trouble.
Underlining that state-level confidence does not erase local complexities, Sarma noted that the political dynamics in Abhayapuri and Bilasipara are markedly different, and that constituency-specific factors could shape results despite the party’s overall optimism.
