Shocking Tiger Attack in Dibang Valley: Arunachal Pradesh CM Responds
Arunachal Pradesh Chief Minister Pema Khandu called the recent tiger attack in Dibang Valley “shocking and unfortunate,” as the State Government announced an ex gratia payment of Rs 10 lakh for the victim’s family. CM Khandu addressed the media, stating, “It is an unfortunate incident. We have alerted the Forest Department, and an investigation is currently underway following standard protocols. We will comply with all government norms and extend our full support to the bereaved family.”
The victim, Chiksen Mangpang, was a head constable from Manfaiseng village in Namsai district, who was killed while returning home after his duty along the Roing-Anini road, falling prey to a suspected wild animal attack.
On February 4, Deputy Chief Minister Chowna Mein criticized the Forest Department, labeling the incident a case of “gross negligence” and a “serious blunder” by officials. He remarked that the tragedy could have been averted with timely precautions, expressing his sorrow with the statement, “This is extremely sad and unfortunate. Such an incident should never have happened.”
Mein pointed out that there had been unreported tiger sightings in the area for nearly a month and urged for public advisories, immediate tranquilization, and relocation of the animal. He stressed the importance of accountability for the oversight, stating that reports and social media had indicated tigers were moving freely in the Mayodia stretch without any warnings issued to commuters. “The forest department should have issued public advisories, warning commuters not to travel at night, not to ride motorcycles alone, and to take precautions. No such notice was given, and a human life has been lost,” he asserted.
He further insisted, “The tiger must be located, tranquilized, captured, and relocated to a safer area,” reiterating the need for accountability for the lapse. This tragic incident highlights the vital need for effective wildlife management and public awareness to prevent future occurrences.
