Lepcha Community Urges Government Support to Save Sikkim’s Siri Cows
GANGTOK: DT Lepcha, a Rajya Sabha MP from Sikkim, has called on the Union government to take immediate action for the preservation of the Siri cow, an indigenous breed essential to the state’s culture and agriculture. Speaking in the Rajya Sabha on February 2, Lepcha emphasized the need for the Siri cow to receive special recognition under the Rashtriya Gokul Mission (National Indigenous Cattle Programme) and the National Livestock Mission.
Lepcha proposed the establishment of dedicated Siri breeding centers and genetic conservation units, as well as farmer incentive schemes. He also urged support for organic dairy products and market linkages to help local farmers remain committed to raising the Siri breed in Sikkim. He expressed deep concern over the declining population of Siri cows, which are integral to local agrarian culture and traditional farming practices in Sikkim and the surrounding Himalayan region.
“This hardy breed is uniquely suited to high altitudes and cold climates, thriving in steep terrains and organic farming settings. It provides milk, organic manure, and crucial livelihood support for small and marginal farmers,” Lepcha stated. However, he highlighted the serious threats facing the Siri breed, including indiscriminate cross-breeding, dwindling grazing lands, insufficient organized breeding efforts, and a lack of adequate policy backing. He cautioned that without prompt intervention, Sikkim could permanently lose this valuable indigenous breed.
