Unlocking Kerala’s Potential: Embrace Neuro-Inclusive Travel for a Transformative Experience
Sivadas A.K., Secretary of the Autism Club in Thiruvananthapuram, emphasized the importance of strong community networks, empathy, and inclusion over specialized services in caring for children with special needs. Speaking at the Kerala for All conclave in Kochi, he highlighted the role of Kerala’s robust neighborhood connections in meeting the unique needs of these children and their families.
During a session focused on ‘Inclusive Tourism through a Neurodiverse Lens,’ organized by Kerala Tourism in collaboration with The Hindu, Sivadas called for enhanced capacity building among key stakeholders in tourism, public transport, and law enforcement sectors. He suggested that groups like Kudumbashree could play a pivotal role in this initiative.
“Kerala must develop an inclusive-destination certification scheme similar to those seen in the West,” Sivadas urged, stressing the necessity of promoting such initiatives on tourism websites. He noted that the rise in neuro-inclusive travel reflects a growing demand for quiet spaces and supportive environments for families with special needs. To complement this effort, he suggested the introduction of travel subsidies and sensory maps to guide visitors to suitable destinations.
Najmul Melath, a father of a differently-abled child and Managing Director of Hopeshore Multidisciplinary School for Special Needs, shared insights on the Special Family Support (SFS) program he helped establish. This initiative, which aims to combat social isolation and undue stress, fosters community-based support among families facing similar challenges in Kadalundy. Melath encouraged local donors to take an active role in identifying and assisting children with special needs in their communities.
As neuro-inclusive tourism continues to reshape the industry, it is crucial for all stakeholders to collaborate and implement practical solutions that ensure accessibility and support for families. By prioritizing community involvement and innovative strategies, Kerala can further strengthen its commitment to inclusivity for individuals with special needs.
In conclusion, the insights shared at the Kerala for All conclave emphasize a collective approach to enhancing the lives of children with special needs and their families. Creating inclusive environments, both in tourism and daily life, will require a concerted effort from various sectors, including local communities. The emphasis on empathy, understanding, and solidarity lays a strong foundation for a more inclusive society in Kerala.
