Firefighters Gain Ground: Dzükou Valley Wildfire Mostly Contained
The wildfire near the Dzükou Valley helipad has been largely extinguished, thanks to aerial water-bombing efforts by the Indian Air Force (IAF). On January 31, authorities announced that 150 personnel from various government agencies and local organizations are set to join the firefighting efforts on February 1. According to Deputy Commissioner of Kohima, the fire concentrated around the Dzükou helipad has significantly diminished following numerous IAF sorties employing bambi-bucket techniques to douse the flames.
Ground reports indicate that the fire around the helipad has been contained, with the main Dzükou Valley now appearing largely free of immediate fire threats. However, flames are still visible near the Dzükou base camp, necessitating ongoing efforts to completely manage the situation. The Deputy Commissioner also visited the entry point to Dzükou Valley at Viswema village on Saturday to evaluate the firefighting operations and commended the work of the surveillance team in monitoring the situation.
To enhance the firefighting campaign, teams from the State Disaster Response Force (SDRF), Fire and Emergency Services, Forest Department, local police, and volunteers from the Southern Angami Youth Organization (SAYO) will engage in manual firefighting operations on February 1. The IAF’s bambi-bucket operations will continue as part of these collaborative efforts to suppress the flames and ensure the safety of the area.
