NSCN(R) Cadre Surrenders: What This Means for Peace in Northeast India
An active member of the National Socialist Council of Nagaland (Reformation), Khunpong Wangsa, aged 30, surrendered on January 28 in Khonsa, Arunachal Pradesh. He is the son of the late Wangching Wangsa and hails from Lower Kolam village in the Tirap district. The surrender took place in the presence of Prabhakar Tripathy, the Deputy Inspector General of CRPF (Operations) Dibrugarh, along with personnel from the 36th Battalion CRPF, 44th Assam Rifle, and local civil police.
Wangsa joined the NSCN (R) on November 25, 2022, as noted in a press release. His surrender was part of ongoing efforts by the 36th Battalion CRPF, led by Commandant Lamkhokam Lhoujem, aimed at fostering peace and stability in the region. The former insurgent has expressed a willingness to renounce violence and reintegrate into society. Legal formalities for his surrender are currently being processed at the Tirap Superintendent of Police office.
The 36th Battalion of CRPF underscored its firm commitment to maintaining peace, security, and development in the area. They have called on misguided youths to abandon their violent paths and rejoin the mainstream community.
