NSCN-KYA Cadre Surrenders: A Turning Point in Arunachal’s Security Landscape
An active member of the NSCN–Khaplang–Yung Aung (NSCN-KYA) surrendered to security forces during a coordinated operation in Longding district, Arunachal Pradesh, on January 19. The individual, identified as Akha, also known as Khawang Wangsu, is 38 years old and hails from Longphong village in the same district.
According to an official from the Assam Rifles, reliable intelligence indicated that an active insurgent was present in and around Longding Bazaar that day. In response to this information, personnel from the Khonsa Battalion and Longding Battalion, in collaboration with Arunachal Pradesh Police, initiated a joint operation in the area.
Upon arriving at the suspected location, the joint team utilized ground sources to establish contact with the insurgent and encourage him to surrender. The official mentioned that extensive counselling, negotiations, and motivational efforts were conducted over several hours.
“The insurgent responded positively to the outreach and agreed to surrender, renouncing the path of violence,” the official stated.
After surrendering, he was taken into custody by the joint team and subsequently handed over to Longding Police Station for legal processing.
Officials emphasized that this surrender underscores the Assam Rifles’ ongoing dedication to restoring peace and normalcy in insurgency-affected regions through targeted counter-insurgency actions, community engagement, and the rehabilitation of misguided youth, working closely with state police and civil administration.
In light of the upcoming Republic Day celebrations, security forces have ramped up counter-insurgency measures across eastern Arunachal Pradesh to prevent any potential disturbances.
