Meghalaya CM Conrad Sangma Addresses Border Security: All is Well
Concerns regarding border security in Northeast India have prompted Meghalaya Chief Minister Conrad K. Sangma to reassure citizens that while international borders are naturally porous, there is no immediate cause for alarm along the state’s frontier. Speaking on January 15 in Shillong, Sangma emphasized the need for heightened vigilance and constant preparedness amidst ongoing discussions about border safety.
The Chief Minister stated that all relevant security agencies, including the Border Security Force (BSF) and the Intelligence Bureau (IB), are actively coordinating efforts to ensure safety along the border. He remarked, “Borders are always porous, and it is not solely for the state to assess their security. The Government of India and central agencies are involved, but as a state government, I can confidently say that necessary steps are being taken.”
During his address, Sangma highlighted the importance of regular coordination meetings among various security entities. He noted that a high-level review meeting took place on December 24, during which border security issues were comprehensively discussed.
Sangma assured the public that the situation is being closely monitored. “As of now, there is nothing major to be concerned about. However, we must remain extremely alert and prepared in every possible way,” he said.
Regarding the status of border fencing, he pointed out that Meghalaya shares an international border of approximately 440 kilometers, with about 30 to 40 kilometers still unfenced due to location-specific challenges. He explained, “These pending stretches are spread across different regions of the state, and each area presents unique issues. We are addressing them one by one.”
The Chief Minister revealed that he had conducted a thorough review of the situation four months ago, leading to the resolution of most of the obstacles. He expressed optimism that the remaining work would be completed shortly.
Furthermore, Sangma mentioned that the Government of India is closely monitoring progress, and he has maintained regular communication with authorities in New Delhi to provide updates and seek assistance. “We are moving very aggressively on this. I am hopeful that the remaining fencing work will be completed in the near future,” he concluded.
