Empowering Minority Voices: Urgent Call for DCs in Bongaigaon, Dhubri
Former president of the All Assam Minority Students’ Union (AAMSU), Rejaul Karim Sarkar, emphasized the need for increased representation of minorities in high-ranking administrative roles during a speech on January 15. Speaking at a cultural program in the Tapattary High School playground in Bongaigaon district, he argued that districts such as Bongaigaon and Dhubri should appoint Deputy Commissioners from the minority community.
The event, organized by the Tapattary Regional Youth Club, took place in a minority-dominated area and attracted a large audience of local residents and youth. Alongside cultural performances, it served as a significant platform for discussing political and social issues such as representation, education, and community rights.
Sarkar delivered a passionate address, highlighting education as the key to empowering minority communities. He urged parents to prioritize education, asserting that financial struggles should not impede children from receiving necessary educational opportunities. “If required, sell your kidney but make sure to educate your children, be it a boy or a girl, so that tomorrow they can take up government positions,” he stated, prompting applause and strong reactions from the audience.
He further explained that administrative leadership should mirror the demographic realities of regions with substantial minority populations. Local representation at the Deputy Commissioner level, he argued, would help address long-standing grievances and promote inclusive governance.
On issues of dignity and rights, Sarkar condemned any intimidation against the minority community. He asserted that any attempts to threaten or undermine the community would be met with firm resistance.
As the program concluded with cultural performances, Sarkar’s remarks remained a central focus, illuminating ongoing discussions about education, administrative representation, and the socio-political challenges faced by minority groups.
