Mizoram to Kickstart Ginger and Broomstick Procurement on February 2
The Mizoram government is set to begin purchasing ginger and dry broomsticks from local farmers starting February 2, as part of its flagship ‘Bana Kaih’ handholding scheme, Chief Minister Lalduhoma announced on Tuesday. This announcement came during the inauguration of a ginger processing unit located in Sairang, approximately 21 km from the state capital, Aizawl.
Lalduhoma emphasized that this initiative aims to bolster farmers’ incomes while enhancing Mizoram’s reputation as a leading ginger producer. He pointed out that despite Mizoram being primarily agricultural, no single crop has previously defined the state’s national identity. “Today, Mizoram is recognised as the ginger capital of India, and this status is the outcome of the sustained hard work of our farmers,” he stated, referencing a recent affirmation from NITI Aayog.
Under the Bana Kaih program, initiated by the Zoram People’s Movement (ZPM) government, key agricultural products are being purchased from farmers at support prices, fulfilling the government’s campaign promises. Since the program’s launch in September 2024, ginger, turmeric, chilli, broomsticks, and unhusked rice have been procured.
Officials reported that last year, the state spent approximately Rs 137.72 crore on ginger procurement alone. During that period, over 48,600 quintals of dried broomsticks were bought for nearly Rs 2 crore, along with 1,473 quintals of unhusked rice valued at Rs 44.18 lakh.
Lalduhoma noted that ginger cultivation has significantly enhanced the livelihoods and purchasing power of rural communities. He also mentioned that Mizoram has promising potential for ‘sapthei’ fruit, with plans to promote its cultivation more broadly in the future.
