Assam CM Announces 296 Job Openings for Tea Tribes and Adivasi Communities
Assam Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma on January 12 distributed appointment letters to 296 candidates from the Tea Tribes and Adivasi communities. This event represents a significant step in the state’s recruitment efforts under its reserved quota policy. The appointments were made through the Assam Direct Recruitment Examination for various government departments, with 130 candidates securing Grade-IV posts and 166 obtaining Grade-III positions.
According to officials, this recruitment round brings the total number of government jobs allotted by the BJP-led government to 156,679 over the past five years. The state government has been conducting phased appointments to benefit candidates from these communities. Previous hiring included teachers appointed on November 12 and positions within the Assam Police and other Home Department branches filled on December 8. Additionally, appointments for both technical and non-technical roles in the Health Department occurred on December 24.
During the event, Sarma highlighted Assam’s innovative approach by implementing a common recruitment examination across multiple departments, emphasizing that the entire process-from examinations to the issuance of appointment letters-was completed with full transparency, despite facing logistical and legal challenges. He noted that last year marked 200 years of the contribution of the tea community to the industry, which underscored the government’s decision to introduce a 3 percent reservation for eligible youth from the Tea Tribes and Adivasi communities in all Grade-III and Grade-IV posts.
“Nearly 1,000 candidates from these communities have been appointed so far this year under the 3 percent quota,” Sarma stated, attributing these opportunities to the reservation policy that aims to foster meaningful social change. He also announced an extension of the reservation policy to include Grade-I and Grade-II posts, thereby enabling candidates to aspire for senior roles such as magistrates, police officers, and university professors.
Sarma outlined several welfare initiatives, sharing that 30 MBBS seats are already reserved for tea tribe students in medical colleges in Assam, with an additional 14 seats recently added. Furthermore, he mentioned that 44 hostels are currently under construction for Tea Tribe and Adivasi students, along with financial support available through the Shahid Dayal Das Panika Self-Employment Scheme.
In addition, he referred to a recent decision by the Assam Legislative Assembly that grants land rights to residents of tea garden areas, a crucial move for these communities. Sarma urged the newly appointed candidates to take pride in their identity and serve the tea garden areas with dedication and sensitivity. He called on them to maintain high standards of public service, particularly for the impoverished and vulnerable members of society.
