Empowering Communities: Revitalizing the Barak River Catchment in Manipur
Imphal: River basins and their catchment areas worldwide, including those in Manipur, are experiencing significant environmental challenges. These issues primarily arise from human activities and climate variability, resulting in severe pollution, deforestation, changed river flow patterns, and an increase in both floods and droughts.
In response, the Manipur government conducted a Participatory Rural Appraisal (PRA) on Thursday to assess the resources, land use patterns, and socio-economic conditions in Saranamai village, located in the Senapati district of the Barak River catchment area. This exercise seeks to analyze various factors, including wealth rankings and a SWOT analysis.
The initiative, led by the Senapati Forest Division, aims to rejuvenate degraded areas and enhance the livelihoods of communities surrounding the Barak watershed, according to an official statement. The data gathered will inform a detailed action plan under the new Compensatory Afforestation Fund Management and Planning Authority (CAMPA), established by the Ministry of Environment, Forest and Climate Change.
Plans are underway to extend this project to all villages within the Barak watershed in the near future. The Barak River holds significant ecological, hydrological, and cultural importance to the Senapati district and beyond. Originating in Liyai Khullen village, the river flows through Manipur, eventually merging into the Meghna River in Bangladesh after traversing Assam.
As part of the greater Ganga-Brahmaputra river system, the Barak basin is the second-largest basin in Northeast India and features several tributaries, including the Makru, Irang, and Tuivai rivers. However, the ecological and socio-economic importance of the Barak basin and its tributaries has been increasingly jeopardized by threats such as forest fires, flooding, bank erosion, deforestation, soil erosion, and landslides.
Addressing these challenges requires a comprehensive, multi-tiered approach focused on revitalizing the river and its ecosystem through sustainable forestry practices.
