BJP Launches Intense 2026 Assam Poll Campaign: Walls Become Battlegrounds
The Assam unit of the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) officially launched its campaign for the 2026 Assembly elections on January 5, commencing a statewide wall-painting drive that aims to enhance its public outreach ahead of the polls. The initiative was unveiled at Khanapara Kendriya Vidyalaya in Guwahati, attended by Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma and Assam BJP president Dilip Saikia.
Sarma emphasized the importance of this grassroots mobilization tool, noting that the campaign is being executed simultaneously across the state. He assured that party workers would only proceed with wall paintings after securing permission from property owners, highlighting the commitment to conduct the campaign ethically. “After obtaining permission, workers will paint the lotus, the BJP symbol. This approach will serve as both public outreach and a campaign medium,” Sarma stated, mentioning that the murals will illustrate the party’s achievements over the past five to ten years.
Saikia elaborated that the painted murals would reflect the accomplishments of the BJP and the “double-engine government,” framing the campaign as a visual narrative of governance and development. He announced that a parallel initiative would soon be initiated in Dibrugarh by Union Minister Sarbananda Sonowal. Both leaders revealed key campaign slogans, with Sarma underscoring themes of security and development. Notable slogans include “Axomor Suraksha, BJP Pratigya” and “Viksit Assam, Jai Aai Assam.”
Saikia further stated that the party’s agenda would revolve around development while preserving Assam’s rich culture, tradition, and civilization, emphasizing the goal of establishing a secure and self-reliant state. Regarding alliance politics, Sarma reaffirmed the BJP’s strong alignment with its NDA partners, including the Asom Gana Parishad (AGP) and allies in Bodoland. He expressed confidence in the party’s organizational readiness for the election phase, claiming, “If we are asked to announce candidates today for 50 constituencies, we can.”
Addressing the candidate selection process, Sarma clarified that ticket allocation is not influenced by financial contributions. “The selection begins at the polling booth and progresses through mandal, district, state, and finally Delhi. Proposals come from party workers, and no fees are involved,” he explained, adding that this method is unique to each political party.
Sarma took the opportunity to criticize the Congress party, alleging that it has been collecting substantial sums in exchange for election tickets. He claimed that amounts ranging from Rs 3 crore to Rs 5 crore are being solicited in various constituencies and accused Congress of neglecting communities after raising these funds. “Congress leaders are even reserving money for personal events like weddings,” Sarma alleged.
As the wall-painting initiative spreads across Assam, Sarma reiterated the BJP’s focus on public service and community engagement, establishing a campaign that intends to reach directly into neighborhoods and streets throughout the state.
