Darjeeling’s Bitter Cold: Winter Temperatures Plummet to 4°C
Cold weather continues to grip West Bengal, with temperatures plummeting in several regions. Darjeeling recorded a minimum of 4 degrees Celsius, while Kolkata experienced the coldest day of the season at 11 degrees Celsius.
Clear skies are expected to persist, maintaining similar temperatures in the coming days, though a further drop is possible. The Meteorological Department has forecast rain and snowfall in Darjeeling from January 1 to 2. “The northerly winds are affecting districts throughout the state. Cold conditions are prevalent everywhere, with temperatures falling significantly. Dry conditions are likely for the next few days, but the cold will remain harsh,” said a weather official.
Additional rainfall is anticipated in Alipurduar, Jalpaiguri, and Kalimpong, which could intensify the chill. Other regions should expect dry weather to continue for now. However, a dense fog warning has been issued for all districts in northern Bengal, with visibility potentially dropping to between 199 and 50 meters. Over the next three days, temperatures could fall by an additional two to three degrees.
In Dum Dum, a suburb of Kolkata, the minimum temperature was recorded at 10 degrees Celsius. In Salt Lake, temperatures dropped to 11.4 degrees Celsius, while Haldia reported 11.2 degrees Celsius. Sriniketan in Birbhum district was notably colder at 6.5 degrees Celsius on Wednesday. Other regions also showed significant drops: Kalyani at 7 degrees, Suri at 7.2 degrees, and Asansol at 7.8 degrees Celsius.
Further temperature reductions were recorded across various districts: Uluberia at 9.5 degrees, Bankura at 8 degrees, Berhampore, Canning, and Mogra all at 9 degrees, with Kalaikunda at 9.4 degrees. Burdwan recorded 8 degrees, Panagarh 9.2 degrees, Barrackpore 8.6 degrees, Jhargram 9.1 degrees, and coastal areas like Digha and Diamond Harbour each observed 10 degrees. Contai and Purulia registered 10.5 degrees and 10 degrees, respectively, as did Basirhat.
Several districts in South Bengal are also under a dense fog warning, where visibility may drop to as low as 50 meters in South 24 Parganas, East and West Midnapore, Jhargram, Purulia, Bankura, and Murshidabad.
