CPI Bodies Honor Anjel Chakma’s Legacy at Ledo Tribute Ceremony
The All India Kisan Sabha (AIKS) and the All India Youth Federation (AIYF), both associated with the Communist Party of India (CPI), held a tribute program for Anjel Chakma on the evening of December 31 at the Ledo bus stand in Margherita. The gathering honored the memory of Chakma, a student from Tripura, who was tragically killed in Uttarakhand earlier this month, with organizers alleging that the incident stemmed from racial discrimination.
During the event, speakers expressed strong condemnation of the ongoing targeting of youths from the Northeast in various regions across the country. Sanjeev Gangooli, Assistant Secretary of the All India Kisan Sabha’s Assam State Council, emphasized the unfortunate reality that young individuals from the Northeast continue to face racial abuse and violence.
Gangooli highlighted that Northeastern youths often endure derogatory racial slurs and stereotyping, labeled with terms like “Chinese,” “momo,” and “chinki.” He pointed out that such prejudice has, in numerous instances, led to serious crimes, including murder. The brutal killing of Anjel Chakma was described by Gangooli as a reflection of a deeper issue of discrimination and intolerance that prevails in society.
He called for the harshest punishment for all perpetrators involved in the crime, urging that exemplary measures be taken to ensure justice for Chakma and to prevent similar tragedies in the future. The organizations also implored authorities to take decisive action to combat racial discrimination and safeguard the dignity and safety of people from the Northeast throughout the nation.
The tribute program concluded with a collective call for unity, justice, and enhanced legal protections against racially motivated violence, stressing the need for a concerted effort to address these critical issues in society.
