Severe Air Quality Alert as Dense Fog Engulfs National Capital
Residents of Delhi woke up to a thick blanket of fog on Monday, drastically reducing visibility and prompting travel disruptions. The India Meteorological Department (IMD) has issued a ‘yellow’ alert warning of dense fog for Tuesday morning as well. Visibility at key locations such as Indira Gandhi International Airport fell to as low as 50 meters at 8 AM before improving to 100 meters by 9 AM. The severe conditions led to the cancellation of at least 128 flights, with another eight diverted and nearly 200 experiencing delays, as confirmed by air traffic reports.
The morning temperatures recorded by the IMD were slightly elevated, with a minimum reading of 8.3 degrees Celsius, which is 1.5 degrees above normal, and a maximum of 22.5 degrees Celsius. Moving into Tuesday, temperatures are expected to hover around 21 degrees Celsius during the day and remain at about 8 degrees Celsius at night.
In terms of air quality, Delhi is grappling with severe pollution levels as well. The Central Pollution Control Board (CPCB) reported a 24-hour Air Quality Index (AQI) of 401, placing it firmly within the ‘severe’ category. This marks a deterioration from the previous day’s AQI of 390, categorized as ‘very poor.’ Data from various monitoring stations across the city indicated that air quality remained severe at 24 of these locations, while 13 reported very poor levels.
As commuters navigate through the adverse weather and alarming air quality, the implications of such environmental challenges highlight the ongoing struggles of living in the national capital.
